Porlock village hall was full to capacity to hear the results of the latest research into Ada Lovelace’s life and legacy at Ashley Combe in Porlock.

Jeff Cox, who is leading the work on the recovery of the woodlands and walks developed by Ada and her husband in the 1830s and 1840s, provided a short overview of her life and work here and then presented the latest results of the research being undertaken at the University of Bristol on the pioneering work of the Lovelaces here on the north coast of Exmoor.

Bristol’s research through the  historical documentation held at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford has provided valuable understanding on the vision and tremendous work that went into developing the ecology of the Ashley Combe woodlands, work which is now being used in helping to recover some key aspects of this work for current and future generations to enjoy as part of the South West Coast Path.

Ada in Porlock is supporting this work and the use of Ada’s scientific legacy to encourage the uptake of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects in local schools.
