Ada in Porlock (AiP) is delighted to enjoy the continuing and active support of Rachel Gilmour, the constituency MP for Tiverton and Minehead.
Ms Gilmour recently took time out from her busy schedule to unveil a new plaque celebrating Ada Lovelace’s active life while she lived at Ashley Combe, Porlock Weir.
AiP has installed the plaque on the South West Coast Path, on one of the tunnels that Ada and her husband commissioned to allow tradesman discreet access to the mansion overlooking Porlock Bay.
Ms Gilmour also viewed the woodland restoration project AiP has initiated in Ashley Combe woods, including the impressive progress already made on the refurbishment of the Victorian dry stone walls that once lined the drives through to Culbone.
She also pledged her commitment to our ambitious programme of educational events already established in our local primary, middle and secondary schools, using the inspiration of Ada’s achievements to promote the study of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
Ms Gilmour has secured a Backbenchers’ debate in the House of Commons, to further highlight the relevance of Ada Lovelace’s passion for mathematics and science for today’s younger generation and the work being undertaken in the region supported by our programme.
